Alex Merrett is a UK based Lighting Designer, Programmer and Operator working in multiple sectors such as Theatre, Music, Coorporate, Events and TV.

Alex’s lighting career started during Year 10 of education. Alex had been involved in the school productions since Year 7, however in year 10 he also designed, programmed and operated his first show in a local theatre back where he grew up in Somerset. From that show on he was set in pursuing a career in the lighting industry. He designed and programmed shows for different directors whilst also gaining experience with a variety of other theatres and event companies.

Alex then went on to work his first Glastonbury Festival with SWG Events on Park main stage as a lighting technician, in 2015. From here he went on to study Production Arts at Bridgwater college, followed by Lighting Design and Technology at University of South Wales. Throughout his studies Alex worked with companies on many different projects to further develop his experience and knowledge.

More recently Alex has continued to take freelance projects whilst also working as t Technical Coordinator at Cardiff Students Union. Here he managed the technical department and all technical aspects for any live music, coorporate and student society events for the two venues within the building, Great Hall and Y Plas.

Alex took a break from freelancing in 2022 to work with SWG as Head of Lighting, here he designed Lighting and rigging systems for many events including high profile private parties, Hampton Court Palace Festival, Glastonbury Festival Park Main Stage, OceanFest, Arena shows and many more. He also dealt with incoming lighting and rigging hires, booking of freelancers, equipment maintenance and rigging calculations.

During his career to date Alex has worked on a variety of events across corporate, festival, music and theatre including but not limited too, Deliotte TaxX conference, Sky Garden London private party, private parties,, Glastonbury Park Main Stage, Glastonbury BBC Introducing Stage, CarFest North and South, Royal Guards polo, Paddington on Ice, WRU Mens and Womans Matchdays, WRU events, Awards Dinners, TV shoots and many many more.

Alex dives into any task that is set, he is friendly and approachable with a strong attention to detail and always thinking outside the box for solutions to any problems.

Alex is also a certified Avolites programmer, owning his own Avolites Tiger Touch 2.

Outside of lighting Alex has experience as a stage technician and also Performer Flying technician. He has operated and spotted shows At the Octagon Theatre and Royal Opera House. Along with maintenance days on Magic goes Wrong and Mamma Mia the party. From Alex’s experience working on stage he has strong knowledge of theatre vocabulary, knowledge in operation of various fly systems including counter weight and also scenery and set.
